Past Partnerships

In 1934, Dr. Strum and Ms. Hazelton realized the need for group solidarity and cooperative effort. They were able to develop a partnership with the Indiana Recreation Association (IRA) and the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) . These efforts continued over the next few years. By 1937 the IPEA had established affiliates (partnerships) with the following organizations:

  • American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPER)
  • Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA)
  • Indiana High School Coaches Association (IHSCA)
  • Indiana Nurses Association (INA)
  • Indiana Public Health Association (IPHA)
  • Indiana Recreation Association (IRA)
  • Indiana State Board of Health (ISBH)
  • Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA)
  • Indiana Student Health Association (ISHA)
  • Indiana Tuberculosis Association (ITA)
  • Midwest District of AHPER
These affiliate relationships were additional signs of a concentrated effort to unify the existing forces within the area of health, physical education, and recreation as well as an attempt to build membership. To exemplify the attempt of enlisting unification, the IPEA added the fields of health and recreation to its name in 1937-38 - Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The fields of health and recreation were encouraged to take an active part in the Association and were granted representation on the Executive Board. Finally, in 1939 the Midwest District of AAHPER held its annual convention in Indianapolis. This event marked the first in a continuing series of meetings in which the district association has held joint meetings with the state association.
